HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 review: A good laptop with better competition

The HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 is now available at the best prices today. (dw0097nr)

The HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 (dw0097nr) is a capable convertible laptop that can handle the day-to-day workload of a work-from-home or distance-learning experience. It features a 14-inch display with a detachable keyboard. In addition, it comes with a few one-of-a-kind features, such as an unusual cellular choice and a slot for full-sized SD cards. The USB-C port and the HDMI port make it possible to connect two more screens, and they both offer 4K resolution. Despite the fact that these characteristics work in the Pavilion x360’s favor, its lackluster performance and underwhelming battery life make it appear that other laptops that we’ve evaluated that are priced similarly to it offer a better value.

Fundamental characteristics of the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14
In spite of the fact that HP’s Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 hasn’t been available to consumers for very long, it’s possible that you won’t be able to get one easily. This is evidence of the buying frenzy that was caused by the requirement to work or study from home during the epidemic. During the course of the review, the laptop was occasionally unavailable to purchase on HP.com, where it is now listed for sale at a price of $700.

In the event that you are unable to locate it, HP representatives have suggested a few choices that are almost equivalent. The HP Pavilion x360 Laptop 14t-dw000, which retails for $650, does not include an Optane memory option nor an LTE WWAN connectivity option. Even more comparable is the HP Pavilion x360 14t-dh200, which retails for $586.95 but does not have any WWAN connectivity choices. Additionally, if you want a 1080p display, you will need to pay a little bit more for this model. However, at the time of publication, both the 14t-dw000 and the 14t-dh200 were available, and it is expected that their performances will be equivalent.

The overall quality of the display and construction
The weight of the HP Pavilion x360 14 is noticeable immediately after removing it from the packaging; however, this is something that will only be an issue if you plan on carrying it around with you. The exterior of our review unit is finished in a rather unremarkable natural silver. A thin strip of silver can be seen running all the way around the perimeter of the Dark Ash Silver keyboard deck.

Because it can be converted through a full 360 degrees, the Pavilion can flip easily from its clamshell configuration into its tent configuration while still bearing its own weight. In the course of a year in which we spent the vast majority of our time cooped up indoors, I came to value laptop computers for their ability to double as mobile entertainment hubs in their spare time.

An unobtrusive grille can be seen directly above the keyboard on the Pavilion x360 14, and it serves the purpose of releasing warm air. Even when performing mundane actions like typing this review, the fan on the laptop continues to make a consistent whooshing sound. However, due to its low volume and somewhat consistent nature, it is able to blend in with the white noise in the background.

The display on the HP laptop is adequate, which is an average level of quality for laptops in this price range. The maximum brightness of its backlight is approximately 250 nits, which is the very bare minimum for what we consider to be adequate for work done inside. The display appeared a little on the dark side to me, which may be due to the fact that my downstairs office receives very little natural light. The color accuracy appeared to be satisfactory, however, and there were good viewing angles from either side. Just don’t plan on using it when you’re outside.

At this price point, a laptop’s aesthetics ought to be a bonus, rather than an integral component of the experience that it provides. However, the lower display bezel is quite large, measuring almost an inch and a half across. This is impossible not to notice. Even though the side bezels are just a quarter of an inch wide and the top bezels are only three-eighths of an inch wide, the overall effect is that the display appears to be too crowded.

The HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 (dw0097nr) has a port for the barrel charger, HDMI 2.0, USB-A, normal USB-C (not Thunderbolt), a slot for a full-sized SD card, and a slot for the SIM card. All of these ports are located on the right side of the device.

My Core i5-1035G1 processor was unable to boost the frame rate of my external 4K display to anything higher than 30 frames per second, despite the fact that the HDMI 2.0 cable allows a single 4K monitor at up to 60 frames per second. Those who have particularly sensitive eyes may find that the sluggish refresh rate causes an uncomfortable feeling. Everything that moves, like a video for example, has the potential to appear choppy, which, over time, can cause eye strain. Even just typing on a screen that is otherwise still might be exhausting. However, if you connect an external 1080p monitor to the Pavilion x360 14, it will power the display at a smooth 60 frames per second (Hz). This problem will no longer exist.

An additional USB-Along with a grille that allows the laptop’s heat exhaust to escape, the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 features a port on the left side of its convertible design.

Within the packaging, HP includes a power supply that is 45W and has a round connector called a “barrel.” This connector is used to charge the laptop. You also have the option of charging the laptop through the USB-C port with a charger that was not manufactured by Apple.

Inputting, recording, and capturing images
Since I have a tendency to favor keyboards with more pronounced key travel, I found that the shallow keyboard on the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 was not particularly comfortable even after using it for an extended period of time. My reviews of laptops are nearly always written on the keyboard of the device that I’m reviewing, so I’ll be pleased to get back to something that gives my fingers more mobility.

The only other thing that bothers me about this keyboard is that the individual keys aren’t very big. Aside from that, the Pavilion’s keyboard offers a pleasant experience when it comes to typing. The column of keys that correspond to Home, Page Up, and other functions runs along the right side of the keyboard rather than in the bottom right-hand corner as is the case with most standard keyboards. (as is more common).

The audio quality of laptops is notoriously poor, and the Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 did not change our minds about this stereotype. It is possible that the lack of a low-end boost is to blame for the thinness, tinniness, and general unpleasantness of the sound produced by its speakers when listening to music or other audio. Music with a pitch range from about middle C to about high C, like “Husavik (My Hometown)” by Molly Sandén, for example, sounded fairly good.

In most cases, technologies that enhance audio are relatively beneficial. Bang & Olufsen provided an audio utility that was neatly constructed with an equalization and noise cancellation for the microphone that was available. In addition, the speakers were calibrated by the company. However, even headphones won’t make much of a difference; your best strategy is to turn up the bass as much as you can.

Although B&O is responsible for the tuning of HP’s convertible Pavilion, this feature is not particularly helpful.

The noise suppression on the microphone is managed by the same application, which, in my experience, is not particularly reliable. The B&O utility can be set up in such a way that it filters out everything other than your voice. During the time that I was recording my voice, it performed a fantastic job of filtering out the back-and-forth of the baseball announcers who were calling the game. On the other hand, one of the effects of this was that the loudness of my voice changed suddenly and unpredictably, which was audible to anyone listening in on a Zoom call. If you use a headset, you should be able to circumvent all of these limits.

The color fidelity of the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14, which, like the cameras included in most laptops, has a resolution of 720p, exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, there is no Windows Hello capabilities at all; there is neither a fingerprint reader nor a depth camera.

You may have noticed that this laptop has an SSD in addition to the Optane Memory technology developed by Intel. Intel developed this technology as a kind of cache in order to increase the loading speeds of applications. When compared to an older laptop equipped with a spinning hard drive, any solid-state drive (SSD) will provide noticeably quicker data access than the older laptop. Despite its enhanced Optane capabilities, you shouldn’t purchase this laptop for that reason, as it won’t make a significant difference in your experience.

A combination of unnecessary software and helpful applications
Consumer laptops sold by HP typically come preloaded with a substantial amount of bloatware, which are unneeded applications that HP packs onto the device in the expectation that you will use them. An app called HP JumpStarts, which can be found on the Taskbar, acts as a gateway to the HP Support Assistant as well as additional offers, such as a free one-month trial of Microsoft 365 for new users and free games from WildTangent and other developers. Shortcuts to both Amazon and Dropbox can be found in the Taskbar. There are individual apps in the Start menu that provide free access to 25 GB of cloud storage on Dropbox for an entire year. Additionally, there are shortcuts to ExpressVPN, Spotify, Netflix, and other services. In addition, you’ll get a free trial of McAfee Personal Security worth three months when you buy a Pavilion.

HP provides a vast selection of its own utility software, the most of which serves a purpose that is beneficial; but, there is simply so darn much of it! The HP Support Assistant, for instance, offers helpful driver updates for a variety of components found within the system. However, it operates independently from Windows Update, which in turn operates independently from the app-centric Microsoft Store. If you put in the effort, you will be rewarded with a great deal of information and diagnostic tools because they are all readily available.

We did not put the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14’s cellular capabilities through their paces during our evaluation. When I am testing throughput and coverage in my town in the Bay Area, I generally plug in a SIM card and drive around. During the time that I was being tested, unfortunately, the levels of wildfire smoke were at levels that ranged from hazardous to toxic, which made it unsafe to drive. Due to the fact that I live on the outskirts of a cell phone tower’s coverage area, using my home as a testing ground for the capabilities of the Pavilion x360 would not be appropriate.
