Looking After Yourself as a New Mom

As a new mom, you must look after yourself. You now have new responsibilities and pressures to deal with in your daily life. If you are not as strong as you can be, you may struggle to handle what gets thrown in your direction as a new mom, from the endless feeds and nappy changes to sleep deprivation and constant feeding. So, before you settle into a routine, take time out to look after yourself before you get stuck in a rut or routine that is hard to break free from.

Speak to Others Including Friends, Family and Loved Ones

Your friends and family are there for you, and they most likely have experienced and been through what you are going through. So, do not be afraid to reach out to them, catch up and have a chat, whether virtually or physically. Just speaking to someone else can make you feel better and can help lift your mood, so don’t underestimate the importance of a good chat and catch up with those close to you.

Take Time Daily to Look After Yourself

Your baby is, of course, the priority, but that does not mean you should neglect your appearance, diet, and mental well-being. As a new mom, you must ensure you look after yourself, especially in those first few weeks and months. Taking a few minutes here and there will help boost your self-esteem, and it will help you do the things you need to do to look after yourself, whether this is having a quick hot shower in the morning or getting a cup of coffee before getting to bed. Quite often, the little things matter, and they can make all the difference.

Make Sure You Eat and Drink Regularly

When the days feel like they roll into one, it can be hard to make sure that you eat and drink enough. Preparing drinks and food in advance and ensuring you eat regularly throughout the day will allow you to have the energy and stamina to see the whole day through before falling asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow! During pregnancy and after giving birth, your taste buds may have changed, and so too may your eating habits. If, for example, you find that you are now having trouble swallowing both food and drink, you may want to look at using a thickening agent such as SimplyThick, which can be added to lots of food and drink items quickly and easily. Getting a well-balanced diet and eating well throughout the day, overcoming any obstacles in your way, will give you the strength and energy to see the day through and prepare for the next day too!

Take the Pressure off Your Shoulders

Take yourself off social media and turn off the screens when you can. Comparing yourself and your journey as a new mom to other moms can cause unnecessary stress and pressure. So, alleviate additional worries and concerns right now and take yourself off social media. Give yourself a break from the endless perfect new baby and mom photos and posts, and instead, focus on enjoying your new little bundle of joy.
