After so many weeks full of rain and partly snow, we can finally inaugurate the balcony season! For my seating group, I built a small balcony table with tiles myself. After-work drinks have to be put down somewhere in style :).
On my last visit to the hardware store (between various lockdowns), the tiles immediately caught my eye! The colors go perfectly with the boho look with natural colors, rattan and ceramic lanterns. I even had the rest of the materials at home.
How to build a balcony table with tiles
You can make the balcony table as big as you want – or how about a tiled bench? Today I will give you the basic instructions that you can adapt for your project.
You need:
- A wooden board, e.g. Multiplex, the size of your tiles plus approx. 0.5 cm for the joint
- Tiles with a pattern (I found my tiles at toom)
- Acrylic for fixing the tiles or normal tile adhesive
- Flexfuge (I used Manhattan Gray)
- four furniture feet (I used hairpin legs, you can now get them in different colors at Bauhaus)
- cordless screwdriver
- suitable screws for the furniture feet
- spatula
First, you attach the furniture feet to the wooden board. I didn’t pin them all the way to the edge, but indented them about 5 cm.
Then you glue the tiles to the board with acrylic or in the classic way with tile adhesive and a notched trowel.
After a short drying time, stir in the joint compound with water until it becomes quite a thick paste and smooth it into the joints and on the edge of the table. If you use gray grout, the edge of the balcony table will later look like a concrete slab :).
Then the excess grout is washed off with a damp sponge and smeared into the joints. Let the table dry for a few hours before you completely wash off the gray haze on the tiles.
