Burney's voice was clearly full of emotion as she took the oath of office, and she was given a ringing round of applause by her colleagues.

"You'd better stop, or I may not be able to go on," Albanese joked.

Burney's predecessor in the office, Liberal MP Ken Wyatt, was the first Indigenous MP and first Indigenous minister in Australian history.

She will likely face high-profile scrutiny, given Albanese's commitment to implementing the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
