Boy’s monstrous mushroom, heavier than a brick, could be biggest ever

A South Australian schoolboy is tonight waiting to hear if he's broken a new world record, after finding an enormous porcini mushroom in the Adelaide Hills.

But the exact spot 14-year-old Jasper Les made the rare discovery remains a mystery.

Tipping the scales at a whopping 2.65 kilograms, the porcini mushroom weighs more than a brick.

An Adelaide Hills family could be set for the record books after discovering a massive mushroom on their property.

"I was just amazed. I've never seen one that big or even close to being that big," he said.

His mother, Melanie Les, said the rare discovery was unearthed while Jasper was walking home from school with his friend Ethan on Wednesday afternoon.

"They came in and said 'check this out' so I ran down and saw it. I just couldn't believe it," she said.

An Adelaide Hills family could be set for the record books after discovering a massive mushroom on their property.

A natural hunter-gatherer, Jasper said his Polish grandparents first taught him about edible mushrooms.

But he never expected to find what could be the biggest porcini in the world in his own Basket Range backyard.

"The Adelaide Hills is quite a special place. It's the only place in the Southern Hemisphere that you can find porcini," his mother said.

But exactly where in the picturesque landscape it was growing will forever be these student's secret.

Jasper Les made the rare discovery of a porcini mushroom tipping the scales at a whopping 2.65 kilograms, weighing more than a brick.

"I found it underneath the oak tree but that's sort of all I can say," Jasper said.

As the Les family waits to hear whether they'll make it into the Guinness World Records book, Jasper has other plans for the monster mushroom.

"Unfortunately there's too much of it for just me to eat so I'll be selling it," he said.

But not before the keen cook tastes his treasure first.

He believes it could make a "good 200 pastas".

"The challenge is on now to try find a bigger one," the schoolboy said.

"I'll definitely be on the lookout."
