Queensland couple in battle with council over $4133 water bill

A Queensland couple has been shocked to receive a $4133 water bill from their local council, which they say has declined to reduce the cost.

Glen Southon, who uses a wheelchair and has multiple sclerosis, is cared for by his wife and nurse, Gaye Southon.

"Initially, before the NDIS came along we basically had to pay for everything," Glen said.

The pair say their Greenbank property in Logan, south of Brisbane, runs primarily on a 95,000-litre water tank.

Their last quarterly bill was just $84, which only increased the couple's surprise at the latest total.

"Absolutely shocked," Gaye said.

The couple typically use under the household average of 400 litres a day, but the new bill suggests their daily water usage exceeds 9000 litres.

When the Southons first reached out to Logan City Council, they say they were told to check the property for water leaks throughout the property.

They have since called on two council representatives to help them with checks, both finding nothing.

The pair said they could face legal action if the payment isn't made.

"I don't mind paying for charges that are genuine," Glen said.

Logan City Council said in a statement there were payment options for the Southons' new debt.

"We have offered some suggestions to the property owners as to possible reasons for the increased usage and recommended that they engage a private plumber," it said.

"Council can provide assistance to customers who have increased water usage with a payment plan."

The Southons say the bill is a warning to others to check their water metres regularly.
