For those of you reading this who are looking for an HK MP5 for sale, you don’t need us to rehash that it’s a legendary subgun.
But you will want to read this short post to revisit the idea of buying an actual HK MP5. There are some options that might be considered better on multiple grounds, such as a Zenith Firearms ZF-5, or one of their variants.

Capturing the Details
The ZF-5 is an American-made MP5-style platform (more on that in a second) that has captured all of the details that made the MP5 what it is.
One look at the platform (check the link above) and you’ll see why. Only the most practiced, discerning eyes could tell the difference.
But the ZF-5 captures more than just the aesthetic of the MP5. It sports the same handling, controls, fluted chamber that aids in easy extraction, and even the same style of MP5 sights.
Perhaps most critically, the ZF-5 is built around a smooth-shooting, roller-delayed blowback action, like the real HK. Don’t settle for a lookalike that comes with a regular blowback action. Once you experience the performance of a roller-delayed blowback, you won’t go back to pure blowback.
The one thing is that it’s semi-auto only, but for most buyers this shouldn’t be a big deal. In fact, if anything, it’s convenient for most buyers since it doesn’t implicate the NFA the way a real MP5, capable of full-auto, would.
The Cost Factor
A real HK MP5 for sale can set you back quite a bit. Depending on where you get it might be able to get a relative deal, but if you get a new one it can set you back tens of thousands of dollars.
That’s great, if you can find one, but at the same time it’s not a bargain. Many MP5 lookalikes only cost a small fraction of the price.
On top of that, there are some good MP5 clones that capture all the details of the MP5, down to the action, minus perhaps only full-auto functionality, and cost hardly 10% of the sticker price of the original.
But price isn’t even the only matter to give you pause on this front.
The Convenience Factor
There are two prongs to the convenience of getting an American-made MP5-inspired platform rather than getting an actual HK.
One is sheer availability. On the one hand, it can be really hard to find an actual HK. The company only exports so many per year. There are used ones available, but there’s a lot of demand and the market remains tight nonetheless.
That alone is a good reason to look into the prospect of an American-made MP5-style platform. The other is that it is American-made itself.
Importing firearms (or buying foreign made firearms) can require a lot of legal red tape that we don’t have time to explore here. That’s a topic for another article, but get in touch with a firearms lawyer if you need more information.
By contrast, if you get an American-made MP5 (which, like the ZF-5, is a semi-auto) it’s basically the same as buying any other semi-auto.
That can save you not just money but effort trying to make sure that you’re compliant with regulations.
