CBCT and Ceph X-ray Machine Maintenance

Whether your office primarily uses a CBCT machine or a panorex machine, or you’re a dental specialist whose diagnostic capabilities and treatment planning are yoked to the abilities of a ceph X-ray machine, routine maintenance is important.

These imaging systems empower your practice and enable a higher standard of care through accurate diagnoses and treatment planning. They’re also likely some of the most expensive pieces of equipment in your office.

Routine preventive maintenance and disinfection aren’t just safer for your patients and practice, they help protect your investment in these dental imaging systems. Here are some high level notes.

General Notes for Routine Maintenance

Some notes for use and routine maintenance are the same regardless of imaging modality. Whether you have a CBCT, panorex or ceph X-ray machine:

  • Keep the area around the system clear and free of clutter. Not only is this safer for you and your patients, but it will ensure that the machine, if it has articulated or moving components, can move properly in order to capture a high-quality image.
  • Ensure proper patient positioning prior to attempting to capture a scan. Additional exposures will incur unnecessary, additional wear and tear on your system, which will amount to accelerated depreciation.
  • To ensure optimal performance, make sure the X-ray system’s firmware is up-to-date. This will help ensure a high-quality experience while also upholding high performance from the system.
  • If you do ever experience any issues with your dental X-ray machine, report them immediately to your service provider or, if your system is under manufacturer warranty, to the manufacturer. This will help prevent small issues from snowballing into much larger problems that can be more difficult, time-consuming, and expensive to rectify.

Sterilization and Disinfection

Sterilization and disinfection are two important components of routine maintenance of effectively any dental X-ray system.

Use only approved chemicals or disinfectants to sterilize the unit between patient exams, as unapproved cleaning agents can damage X-ray system components.

Moreover, upgrade to digital radiography if possible, as any physical media involved in image capture and sharing can potentially become infected. Digital avenues offer for much better cross-contamination prevention.

Also, where possible, opt for extraoral imaging instead of intraoral imaging, for the same reasons. Any patient-to-patient contact with imaging devices represents a potential avenue for infection, and the more you can eliminate contact, the better.
