Solar batteries work by storing energy produced by a solar system during daylight hours, for use at other times, and if you’re interested in investing in solar battery storage, here are the basics you need to know:
- Electricity is generated by solar panels, from sunlight
- The direct current (DC) electricity then flows through an inverter, and goes on to generate alternating current (AC) electricity
- The AC electricity generated by the solar system, can be used to power your home
- Any surplus electricity unused, goes on to charge the solar batteries
- Outside of daylight hours, your home can be powered by the energy stored in the battery
What type of battery do you need?
Your battery type will depend upon the energy potential of your home, and your usage frequency of the solar system, and your solar installer is the best qualified person to guide you.
Currently, however, lithium-ion batteries are generally deemed best for residential solar use, and are the most efficient, and long lasting. That said, they are also the most expensive. If you wish to downgrade your battery, you can choose a nickel-metal hybrid, although it won’t be as efficient as lithium-ion batteries.
Size also matters when it comes to solar batteries, and if you invest in one that’s too small for your requirements, you’ll get a lower output of energy, while opting for a bigger one, will naturally take up more space. In general, if you have a small array of panels on your roof, your battery requirements will be small, while for a larger array, you’ll need a bigger battery. Most experts recommend buying a battery with a higher capacity for energy storage than your home will need, and good quality ones come with efficiency ratings, too, so you can also pay attention to this when making a purchase.
Should you invest in solar battery storage?
While the decision is entirely yours, if you have a regular need for emergency backup power (such as if you regularly experience power outages), aren’t able to take advantage of net metering, or have a complicated utility rate that dictates when you should and shouldn’t use high power appliances for example, than battery storage will likely be a smart decision.
