Nathan Jones (senior-biochemistry and molecular biology) said he and Jessica Maroclo (senior-psychology), who is listed as a Virginia resident in the Penn State student directory, went to a Halloween party this year under the impression that only a “small group” of friends would see their get-ups.

I know it does not represent a great majority of Penn State students, or of people in
general, but come on people. Starting with a picture on Facebook, this has now created a firestorm of outrage.

With kids these days, nothing shocks me anymore, except Americans apathy to it all:

Two Penn State students, dressed as Virginia Tech shooting victims, at a Halloween party have enraged people from the Virginia Tech community, as well as the entire country. It only took a couple of idiots from Penn State to detract from all the great things the student body did after the trajedy.

I’ve seen all of the controversial pictures. They are of two Penn State students and are extremely graphic. Both are wearing Virginia Tech t-shirts and elaborate make-up. Both have bullet holes in their bodies.

“It’s not that it was funny, it’s that we are notorious and infamous in the state college, so we have to do things that push the envelope just for shock value,” he said.

Penn State officials were quick to respond to the costumes,”We are appalled that these individuals would display this level of insensitivity, indifference, and lack of common decency and sense by dressing up in this manner,” the school said.

“The fact that one of these individuals is actually from Virginia, makes it even more difficult to understand. Just because something is within the bounds of the Constitution and free speech, does not mean it should be undertaken. We certainly condemn these ugly and senseless actions. Most Penn Staters are as offended by this as anyone from Virginia Tech would be– and rightfully so. These two people do not represent 90,000 Penn State students. They represent themselves.”

After seeing the pictures, a Virginia Tech student created a Facebook group called, “People Against This Costume.” Some of the upset members have left threatening messages to the Penn State students.

“This is a group of college students who now think it’s trendy to be upset about their friends being killed,” one of the two Penn State students who wore the costume said. “I don’t know what they teach people in Virginia Tech, but at Penn State we don’t learn to threaten people with murder to teach them that murdering is wrong.”

He goes on to defend the pictures.

“The thing is, everybody’s making a big stink about Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech was 32 deaths out of the 26 thousand that happen in America everyday,” he said. “That’s the problem with college students. They all live in an ivory tower of privilege. They don’t understand, when it all boils down to it, it’s someone wearing a costume.”

Reaction from Tech students and Blacksburg residents was disgust.

“That somebody would have the nerve to mock [the victims]. They were really good people,” said local business owner, Carol Gwin.

Gwin knew three of the victims in the shootings and considered them cherished friends.

Remember last year at the Blue and White game when we spelled out VT in honor of the shooting victims at Virginia Tech? Or all the Virginia Tech t-shirts everyone was wearing? Or the Penn State shirts in maroon and orange? Or the $110,000 Family Clothesline donated from the sale of those shirts? Well it all was just ruined, cause some people dressed like a “Virginia Tech Shooting Victims” on Halloween. People, if it’s on Facebook, someone will find it.

We first came across an article on WSLS’ website, the NBC station in Roanoke Virginia, which says that they found pictures of two Penn State students who dressed up like Virginia Tech shooting victims for Halloween and posted the pictures on Facebook. It’s surprising The Collegian staff missed this when they wrote the piece on the “gay KKK member,” “Aunt Jemima” and “pregnant black girls” that people dressed up like this Halloween (wtf is wrong with us here?)

Anyway, a “People against this costume” group was formed on Facebook (which is closing in on has over 4,000 members) in response to the costumes. The administrator of the group has blacked (browned?) out the face of the girl in the photo and removed any discussion of who she is. They even closed down the wall for a while because of some threatening messages that were posted, but it’s back up.

They wanted shock value? How about a taser?

Since the start of the Facebook group, the “victims” have started to receive some threatening messages, to which he says, “This is a group of college students who now think it’s trendy to be upset about their friends being killed,” one of the two Penn State students who wore the costume said. “I don’t know what they teach people in Virginia Tech, but at Penn State we don’t learn to threaten people with murder to teach them that murdering is wrong.”

Can we really give this a disdain for the entire university? If the tragedy taught us anything it taught us not to judge an entire community because of one sick individual. Penn State gave great support last spring.

The thing is, everybody’s making a big stink about Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech was 32 deaths out of the 26 thousand that happen in America everyday,” he said. “That’s the problem with college students. They all live in an ivory tower of privilege. They don’t understand, when it all boils down to it, it’s someone wearing a costume.

WOW! Just wow.

If I went to Penn State I would be ashamed & embarrased.

  2. Nothingseemstoamazeme on December 7th, 2007 1:51 pm

I can’t even begin to describe my sorrow for the families and friends of Virginia Tech. Not only was it wrong and distasteful coming from another college, but someone from VIRGINIA!!! I am from Virginia and I am embarrassed! And Thank God it was only 32 out of thousands. How could you even say that?Next time you need a shock factor to improve your rep. make fun of something worth making fun of, not a tragedy. These two seriously need a lot of help if they think there is any justification to this!!

  3. Pat on December 7th, 2007 1:51 pm

It makes me sad for them. It shows immaturity. But I wonder if these same students would have dressed in this manner if one of their friends had been one of the students killed. I hope one of these days they will develop compassion for others.

  4. stunned@vt on December 7th, 2007 1:52 pm

Disgusting. Theres really nothing else to say other than its just disgusting. To do something like this for shock value is just down right sad. These students are sad human beings for believing that this would be tolerated. If they’re so into shock value, lets put them in front of the families of the victims and see how shocked they are!

  5. patwhitaker on December 7th, 2007 1:53 pm

What were they thinking while dressed up like the victims of Tec. i’ts just plain wrong. I hope the two Pen. students who did this gets their just Deserts.

  6. bekifife on December 7th, 2007 1:53 pm

To the two stundents at Penn State who dishonered Virginia Tech, I am sure you don’t speak for Penn State. I am going to attribute your incredible lack of taste and compassion to ignorance. you think you’re invincible. You don’t understand the fragility of life. I doubt if you’ve ever lost a friend, loved one or aquaintaine to a random act of violence. Unfortunately, students at Virginia Tech have. It’s a horrible and difficult lesson. Grow up and don’t ever do anything so thoughtless ag

  7. Cait on December 7th, 2007 1:54 pm

Upon hearing about these pictures, I was not only appauled by such behavior, but I was also ashamed that people have the nerve to do something of this nature. It sickens me to think of the lack of respect these two students have displayed. The student who did the phone interview said it was “trendy” to care when a friend dies, which makes me question “wouldn’t you care if your friend just died?” Just because it didn’t happen at your school doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have respect for the victims.

  8. MASI on December 7th, 2007 1:54 pm

I think that something should be done with this guy from Penn State. He sounds mentally disturbed and that he could be the next student to cause trouble. I think this guy should be in as much trouble as the girl that he was talking about.

  9. PAnativeVTmom on December 7th, 2007 1:54 pm

As a PA native, and a VT Mom, I am thoroughly disgusted that anyone would find such behavior acceptable, even in a private setting. Sadly, two demented young people can make an entire university look bad. Our kids do not find it trendy or amusing that their friends have lost their lives. I pray Penn State never falls victim to such a terrible loss. Penn State should be embarrassed and these students should be ashamed.

  10. amanda on December 7th, 2007 1:55 pm

This is ridiculous!!! No one should be doing this! I don’t care if they live in the deep blue sea! I want to know how bad the pictures are! Either way they’re gonna be really bad.

  11. Anonymous on December 7th, 2007 1:55 pm

As if the costume wasn’t bad enough, the interview really cemented this character as a complete fool. I feel bad for all the folks at Penn State who have to share the same town as this sorry excuse for a human being.

  12. sumonered on December 7th, 2007 1:56 pm

What has happened to our society? Teenagers and college kids today seem to be regressing. They know nothing of respect or compassion for other human beings. They do as they please, with no fore thought, and with no discipline, and then they kill each other. Could it be our fault for taking prayer and the pledge of allegiance out of our classrooms? Were they tools that helped to teach our children pride and respect?

  13. VPI55 on December 7th, 2007 1:56 pm

I am a 1955 graduate of Tech (VPI) and served in the Corps of Cadets all 4 years. Nothing of this nature ever occurred while I was a student. Something needs to be done nationwide to prevent college students from doing such stupid things.

  14. jon on December 7th, 2007 1:56 pm

I think action should be taken on part of their school. This is an outrage and purely a selfish act.

  15. VTLuv on December 7th, 2007 1:58 pm

These kids are heartless. I have not gone a day without thinking about the events of last April. We lost our classmates and our friends. I have lost count of how many nightmares I have had since the shootings, and it hurts me to see these two kids being so insensitive. I just don’t understand.

  16. Anonymous on December 7th, 2007 1:58 pm

The costume itself is very offensive, but I find that his comments in the interview are actually even worse. He is very disrespectful to not only Virginia Tech as a university, but its students and administrators as well. There is clearly something very, very wrong with this individual; I can’t imagine anyone doing and saying such things in a sane mindset. Penn State should keep a close eye on him, as some of his comments sounded eerily similar to some of Cho’s in those awful video tapes.

  17. biga4life on December 7th, 2007 1:58 pm

I honestly don’t know where to begin on this…it disgusted me to a point to where I was utterly and completely sick to my stomach! Obviously the 2 students from Penn State don’t have any common decency or respect for the horrible situation that occured on April 16, 2007. I bet if they were put in the same scenario the tables would be totally different.

  18. Zach on December 7th, 2007 1:59 pm

I cannot beleive after such a tragedy that someone would even mention doing that. It is just really wrong someone could enjoy doing that. I hope they realize someday that they owe everyone an apoligy. And they are setting really bad examples for everyone else.

  19. issam on December 7th, 2007 1:59 pm

I am appalled by this story. As a current Penn State student, but more importantly a Virginia Tech alumnus, I am shocked and so incredibly dismayed by the actions of the Penn State students. Their irresponsibility, immaturity, lack of thought, sensitivity, and downright moral grounding is a testament to the kind of human beings that they are. To be fair, the threats against them are plain ignorant and unwarranted. As Hokies, we are BETTER than that!

  20. Matt on December 7th, 2007 2:00 pm

I’m mad I didn’t think of it. Ya its insensitive, but so is a lot of other things people do everyday. He obviously didn’t get beat up at that party, so why worry about it now. The costume makers are getting way more attention than they ever thought and I’m sure they are loving it. Maybe next year I will be president Kennedy.

  21. macgregor on December 7th, 2007 2:00 pm

So I knocked back about a gallon of Maalox and made it through the interview with the Penn State kid. Wow, 19 solid minutes of a sociopath wallowing in self-pity, self-aggrandizement, and blaming everyone else for his problems. Sound like anyone else we know?

  22. Bure1322 on December 7th, 2007 2:01 pm

I know all the stuff that happened was sad. But, I’ve always wondered something? I go to Virginia Western Community College and if the shootings would have taken place there instead of at Va. Tech would people care as much? Sadly I don’t think they would. It is sad when anyone dies but it seems like people turn what happened into some sort of a football game. People can argue with me as much as they want but that is the main reason people like Virginia Tech. I think we’ve heard enough.

  23. vtstudent on December 7th, 2007 2:02 pm

The fact that he is trying to make it alright by comparing how many people died at VT to the national average shows how desensitized people are today, just because it happens every day does not make it any less wrong.

  24. Jonsey on December 7th, 2007 2:02 pm

Apparently this jerk has no compassion or common sense left in his brain….my God. “If someone had told me they felt this way…” NO YOU IDIOT…ITS CALLED A NATURAL HUMAN RESPONSE TO HAVING YOUR FRIEND(S) HAD THEIR BRAINS BLOWN OUT IN CLASS BY A PSYCHOTIC NUT!!! What did you think people wouldn’t be upset? Jesus Christ…I work in DC during the breaks as a Security Guard and yes I have had to deal with dead and seriously injured people since 4/16/07 so I get where he’s coming from about DC

  25. Jonsey on December 7th, 2007 2:03 pm

and all, but it has never removed or deadened my compassion or empathy towards others. That his is non-existent scares me truly. Perhaps he and his friend will wake up one day and realize how much pain they inflicted on others.

  26. Amy on December 7th, 2007 2:03 pm

I’m not even sure what should be done with these students. I don’t think there is a punishment big enough. How these 2 people could have such a low regard for human life, and such disrespect for all of these families and this comunity, is just beyond me. It just sickens me. This is a sad sad day. My heart goes out to all that have been victomized (again) by such ignorance.

  27. Anonymous on December 7th, 2007 2:03 pm

i listened to the convo between the reporter & the guy & he seemed like he would take the blame with his friend but i guess he chickened out, & left his friend for all the blame cuz she’s the only one in the picture.

  28. Anonymous on December 7th, 2007 2:04 pm

This is ridiculous. I cannot believe that people can be so heartless. How can it be “trendy to be upset about their friends being killed”? I was here last year and I was fortunate enough that everyone I knew was safe and okay. But I can tell you that I think about it every day when I wake up and every night before I fall asleep at night. I love Virginia Tech this is my home and the people here are my family. This is disrespectful to the 32 amazing people the world lost that tragic day.

  29. Sue on December 7th, 2007 2:04 pm

I think that this is an outrage. It not only shows disrespect for the ones involved but also shows how little people consider others these days. If they were on the other side of the table, I don’t think they would feel the way they do now.

  30. HOKiE4LIFE on December 7th, 2007 2:04 pm

this kid not only degrated himself, his university and human kind… how could someone be so stupid..burning in hell is his best option.. GO TECH

  31. pleasestayclassyPSU on December 7th, 2007 2:05 pm

come on guys. we go to the best university in the whole world. WE ARE better than that. I hope the whole penn state community is ashamed and embarrassed by that. We need to find these guys and have a serious talk with them. Penn State as a whole has embraced VT as we realize the same thing could happen anywhere. I just hope the Virginia Tech community can forgive these two ignorant “penn state” students and realize that as a whole penn state is whole heartedly with VT.

  32. psualum on December 7th, 2007 2:05 pm

Speaking as a Penn State Alumni, please do not take the irresponsible actions of a very small handful of students as an accurate representation of the student body or the school. This guy was apparently so popular that a whopping 6 people attended this “party”. Every Halloween there are stories of college kids in controversial costumes — this is just another example. Penn State has always supported Virginia Tech, and these kids need to grow up.

  33. jared on December 7th, 2007 2:06 pm

Something obviously needs to be done to this young man. How can anyone in their right mind say that we as Virginia Tech students are in “ivory towers”. We are still in so much pain and always will be. This student needs to pay for his actions and maybe the actions that are chosen will get him the publicity that he so dearly wanted. As for the girl, she needs to be punished for the same thing. Just as Penn State said, it does not represent the school, but it represents individuals.

  34. wonderingwonderer on December 7th, 2007 2:06 pm

It is college age defense mechanism…our young adults who attend college are raised in violent times now..we were not..and can not understand their distasteful choice of costumes. But you are talking about some drunk college kids at a halloween party..their judgement was impaired and they saw it as a shock value costume, period.Did people that dressed up like Steve Irwin/ Anna Nicole who also tragically died make the news?Disturbing are the threatening replys from VT Facebook to the 2 Penn guys.

  35. psualum on December 7th, 2007 2:26 pm

As a PSU alum and supporter, I am shocked and saddened that such an event took place. On top of that, after all of the discussion that has happened, the boy still thinks he can justify his costume. Yes, there might be 26,000 tragic murders that happen every year, but who gave him the right to decide that these 32 are okay to make fun of. I’d like to know if someone had been murdered that was close to him, would he dress up as them with a bullethole in his chest next halloween? Doubtful, or at least I hope so.

  36. Taylor on December 7th, 2007 2:29 pm

There is no excuse for these costumes. It’s ridiculous and sorry, but something is wrong with this guy. The costumes are bad enough, but then is self righteous comments? They’re scary. And as far as the threats to them, don’t waste your breath. Rise above, please. One question, how come their names are being protected? I haven’t heard any names and I am wondering why. Someone this arrogant deserves to have their name put out there. Yes, I know it will give him the attention he wants, but he will then get his karma when he is applying for jobs. I would love to see him walk into my office for an interview.

  37. PSUALum2 on December 7th, 2007 2:57 pm

Lots of distasteful costumes on Halloween at all colleges. You know what was a popular one a couple years ago? The blackface, torn clothes, case of stolen beer carrying Hurrican Katrina looter. I bet they had those at VT as well as every other campus in the country. And you know what, I bet 99% of people that saw it laughed, just like in this case. And I bet PSU wasnt the only college that had these costumes walking around. Its just the way it is.

  38. Hokie on December 7th, 2007 3:27 pm

Well PSUALUM2, thanks for continuing to make Penn State look even worse! During my 4 years @ VT I NEVER saw black face, Katrina victim costumes, or any of that crap. I heard about Steve Irwin ones, which are distasteful as well, but did not see any. I don’t know, I guess I just don’t associate myself with those type of people. At least the girl that did the black face mocking Jena 6 apologized profusely and felt like an idiot for doing it. The worst part about is it that this guy doesn’t even have any remorse! He is proud and arrogant, can’t wait until karma catches up to his ass.

  39. Kelly on December 7th, 2007 3:28 pm

I do think it’s important that all those outraged by the VT costume remember to rise above and approach the situation in a mature manner; not responding in retaliation and dropping to the level of these PSU students.
The students from PSU have brought a horrible reputation to their campus!! I think it’s appalling that last year they dressed up as the Amish victims, from another recent school shooting, and weren’t shunned immediately by friends and people who saw them.
I think that PSU needs to offer counseling to all students who were dressed up in this ‘costume’ and the people who attended the party. I truly believe they have psychological issues. They hold characteristics of a sociopath and or psychopath. They show no emotions through their actions and words, and cannot relate to other peoples’ loses.
While we are all outraged by the events that took place during Halloween, we should pity those students who obviously have severe issues, their families, friends, and school they embarrassed greatly.
My love and support go out to the VT community and families! There is no other school like Virginia Tech!

    We are the Hokies.
    We will prevail.
    We will prevail.
    We will prevail.
    We are Virginia Tech!

  41. Mark on December 7th, 2007 4:11 pm

I am currently sitting in the library at Penn State University. And after reading this I feel nauseous, and quite frankly frightened. It is eerie that someone could do such a cold thing and show no remorse for their actions. It does seem that some type of psychological problem exists in the minds of these students. And I hope my University seeks out these individuals, to at least evaluate their mental state. I’m sorry guys for the actions of my fellow class mates. We were all made aware of this incident today– as it was covered on the front page of our school news paper. And I assure you we are all disgusted and ashamed.

  42. hokiedmb on December 7th, 2007 4:43 pm

This is all a result of that guy in Florida and the “Don’t Taze Me Bra” situation. This LOSER thinks he can get his fifteen minutes by doing something so outrageous that it will cause controversy. After listening to this interview this guy sounds like a remorseless jerk who does not understand what took place in Blacksburg. Of course people die everyday, but this was the single biggest mass killing in United States history… and the fact that it occurred while students were sitting in class makes it worse. This kid, this coward, is way out of line, and i hope he and his little tramp of a girlfriend rot in hell right next to cho!!

  43. Hilary on December 7th, 2007 4:48 pm

As a Penn State student, this makes me sick. I can’t believe anyone would be so pathetic as to mock such a tragic event. This is no reflection of the majority of Penn State students, and I am very sorry to VA tech students, friends, and family for the behavior of these juvenile individuals. I’m so ashamed that these people go to Penn State, since I fear they have now scarred a reputation.

  44. VTGRAD92 on December 7th, 2007 4:48 pm

I do not think VT grads and students are mad at PSU students, they are just mad at these individuals. We all remember what PSU did for us and the way we were embraced. The guy is just an idiot and sounded like one in his interview. This should just make everyone think before they say or do anything. Will I offend anyone and what if I was in their shoes? I hope that the threats to them stop and that they actually realize that was not funny, nor clever, and that the only person who would enjoy that is the killer who unfortunately will live in infamy. Just keeping his wrath in the memory and honoring him by making costumes is a joke on them.

  45. Dennis Ormann on December 7th, 2007 4:50 pm

I think it’s hilarious. Lighten up.

  46. J L Forbes on December 7th, 2007 5:11 pm

Dennis, you think its hilarious because I’m sure none of your friends or classmates were killed that day. It’s disgusting that people can mock what happened.

  47. The Ghost of Blair Thomas on December 7th, 2007 5:11 pm

If I went to Penn State, I would be embarrassed. Not over this, just because I would have to tell people, “I went to Penn State.” I would probably lie and say, “I went to ITT Tech.”

  48. john donato on December 7th, 2007 5:12 pm

Anyone know where I can find other pics, I can’t be properly outraged with the 2 crapy pics posted here, and all the major news outlets seem to be riding some high horse about not showing them… Like Im going to suddenly respect cnn for its concern for the feelings of others…

  49. Blair on December 7th, 2007 5:29 pm

As a Penn State student I am totally shocked and disgusted and miserable with the idea that someone could be so insensitive. I’ve never seen our student body so enraged and I am truly disgusted…these two are NOT Penn State students but just rude and ignorant people who wish to be. The entire campus is sick with anger and united with support towards Virginia Tech and the disgust and anger towards these two people. I think I speak for the Penn State student body when I say that I’m truly sorry and upset, and those two will NEVER be considered Penn State students…they do not represent us as a whole but rather just their dissapointing selves.

  50. Daniel on December 7th, 2007 5:32 pm

  54. Very sad on December 7th, 2007 5:58 pm

As someone who attended Penn State I can tell you that these individuals do not represent PSU. I am so very sorry to the families, friends and students of VT. Please know that we do not “push the envelope” at Penn State. This boy is in no way a part of the Penn State family.

  55. FlBiker on December 7th, 2007 6:50 pm

I dressed in a Michael Vick uniform and dragged two stuffed puppies around by chains, does that make me a bad guy?

  56. vt student on December 7th, 2007 6:57 pm

“the Penn State students who dressed up as murder victims in no way disrespected anyone or anything”

Quotes like these are the ones that hurt the most. How is this not disrespectful? I wonder if people like this ever think about the “what-ifs?” What if my best friend was shot one day. What if 3 of my professors died trying to help others. What if? Yes it is halloween, yes people dress up as stupid things such as dead celebrities. Well news flash people. Celebrities are usually the ones that kill themselves with drugs and alcohol. I have never seen anyone dressed up as an assassinated President Kennedy, or even a victim of 9/11. Yes 32 people died, but they died in such a manner that is so disgusting and wrong. You may not have known them, but I did. 26,000 students did. Many more families did. Those two students should have more remorse than anything. They are the same age as the people that died. How is dressing up like this funny? Questions like that I will never know. RIP 32

  57. clayton on December 7th, 2007 11:23 pm

    I think its quite funny…

what kind of people would dress up as dead students?

what kind of people (everyone that is “outraged”) would make this into such a big deal that glorifies these douchebags for doing a stupid stunt like this. pity them and let it go.

how the media tries to create these meaningless stories into a national phenomenom….last time i checked there were people being killed, children starving, etc going on in america that is a LOT worse than drunk morons at a dumb college dressing up (as is their God-given right of freedom) to do.

    get a life people

These two pictures are disgusting. the individuals that wore these costumes should be ashamed. They need to put themselves in other peoples shoes and think of how they would feel if someone wore a costume depicting their friend’s death. i think they might think differently seeing their friend’s life exploited in such a manner. i feel sorry for the rest of Penn State who have to be associated with these two individuals. It is a disgrace. the students, friends, faculty, alumni, and entire community of Virginia Tech, are finally beginning to recover, and this disrespecful event just opened all of the old wounds that were finally beginning to heal. i know i will never be able to walk through the memorial without crying and remembering the events of last april.

Two kids going after shock value with thier costumes. They did not think thier actions completely through.

The girl will look back on it as the dumbest thing she has ever done.

The boy will look back on it as the 2nd dumbest thing he has ever done. His interview will be the dumber by far. He would have been better off saying that it was incensative and stupid and he meant no harm and was sorry.

It can probably be summed up as a total lack of judgement – something they will regret doing for the rest of thier lives. I don’t think they need to be disaplined further.

  60. Doug on December 8th, 2007 12:27 am

These people have the right to dress up however they want. However, they should be ashamed of themselves. This is a major error in judgement.

That said, there is a lot of blame to go around here…including the media for sensationalizing the story to begin with. For example, NBC aired video of the shooter on the the Nighty News. Everyone is getting pulled down in the gutter here and common sense has gone out the window completely.

  61. curious on December 8th, 2007 2:39 am

i think it’s kind of sweet that these people are still remembered. I mean sure, maybe it’s a little crass, but isn’t it a good reminder of the memory of these students? Maybe the death of these students has caused such an impact other members of a student body that they thought it’d be kinda cool to dress up as them. And, maybe, you know, if the virginia tech students are looking down from heaven, they’d think, “wow. that is fucking awesome. people are dressing up as ME! for halloween. And, people remember us. People still think of us.”
And would you be so mad if they’d dressed up as abraham lincoln with gunshot wounds? I don’t think you would. Maybe his wife would be a little miffed, but she’s dead! So maybe it’s okay to dress up as murder victims as long as all parties emotionally involved are dead? Maybe after say, a couple centuries have gone by, it’s okay? Perhaps! Perhaps you are right.
And in conclusion, I would just like to say that maybe it isn’t virginia tech shirts and bullet holes and fake blood that should be pissing you off. Maybe it’s the fact that so many people can just rifle through their kitchen drawer and find some sort of fire-arm in there, that can cause such devastating harm, not just to the people who were murdered that day, but to everyone that had to live through that incident.

It comes down to a generation of narcisists whose only pleasure and purpose is self glorification. “Hey look at me. See how shocking and original I can be.” It’s not original, guys. It’s all been done before. It is just that most have the decency to just not go there. But, you went there and you have been exposed for the shit you are.

When it comes to being offensive about Christianity such as putting a crucifix upside down in a jar of urine and calling it “Piss on Christ” – all the worlds Liberals leap with joy and cheer when the Liberal “artists” do this. When it comes to attacking Conservative Christians, most Liberals whole heartedly support the mass slaughter of Republicans and conservatives and totally support anything that attacks them or what they believe in.

Problem is – Liberal Democrats think that free speech is only for them and their political causes and not for anyone else.

When Janet Reno and Bill Clinton went down to Waco TX and burned dozens of women and children to death – all the Liberals of the world leapt with joy and mocked the victims – even to this day. Same thing with Ruby Ridge and many other such instances.

At the same time the Liberals fall over backwards to not only protect the “rights” of Islamofacist Terrorists, the Liberal Democrats want to give Terrorists more and more rights and help the Terrorists take over America. Why? Liberals hate America to its core and want it destroyed – period. Liberals are Leftist Socialists and Leftist Socialists hate America and always have. Why do you think Liberal Democrats constantly attack and blame America?

Just remember, all this crap is coming out of our universities which are totally controlled by Liberal Democrats. The vast majority of college students are Liberal and controlled by the Democrat Party. So, they are the direct product of Liberal Democrat style, sensibility and indoctrination. If you think this is bad, wait until the Democrats size power. This is what our entire nation will look like on a daily basis, not just isolated incidents.

A lot of people have said “Penn State should be embarrassed and ashamed.”

Well, we are. Embarrassed, ashamed, shocked, and saddened. I can’t tell you how heartbroken so many of us are over this. Every day on campus, I still see at least a few people in their V-Tech shirts–believe me, we haven’t forgotten how easily something like that could happen here, or anywhere. I just hope everyone realizes that these two students in no way represent the rest of us.

  66. Anonymous Virginian on December 8th, 2007 6:35 pm

These people absolutely need to take public responsibility for their actions, and beginning with being expelled from Penn State. Everything the Penn State student says in his interview pushes responsibility on anyone and everyone else. He acted as a completely callous and heartless fool, as did anyone else that participated in this event. That he feels no shame, and rushes to defend himself and his friends for being “controversial” in their theatrical display of the carnage and mass murder of their peers (as though that was an absolute value to be defended in and of itself) indicates something deeply, deeply pathological.

My sorrow and condolences for the VT community for having their wounds re-opened by these people. My hope is that they attempt in some way to repair the damage they have done, beginning with an APOLOGY, instead of an irrational, blubbering nonsensical defense of barbaric behavior.

  67. Patrick on December 8th, 2007 7:18 pm

Is this really news worthy? Looks like the media trying to stir up controversy by covering it.

“What horrible people to make fun of such a tragic event..Life has a way of coming back around and biting you.”

No it doesn’t..or at least there is no guarantee. People say that to make themselves feel better in situations they know there is nothing they can do. In less than a year the vast majority will have forgotten about this. Moral indignation rarely lasts.

  68. Greg on December 8th, 2007 8:10 pm

Actually, the biggest single mass shooting of innocent people in US history was at Wounded Knee…approximately 300 people, in fact.

Considering how utterly violent US culture is and how in denial of its pathological violence it also is, I am not at all surprised that its youth would think “costumes” like this are okay. The majority of Americans, after all, still think it’s okay to have a team called the “redskins”.

    You reap what you sow.

Shortly after Princess Diana died, a friend of mine had what I thought was one of the best Halloween costumes ever: She wore her prom dress and had a bunch of fake blood and tire marks painted across the dress, and it was FUNNY. I have a hard time understanding why people would be so offended by kids dressing up as dead people. They apparently don’t understand the holiday at all. This pompous nonsense is more disgusting to me than any Halloween costume could ever be.

  77. Dana on December 9th, 2007 9:44 pm

I cant believe someone would wear that as a costume. I loved how he said it was for shock value for 6 of his friends. Well if you look at the picture it looks like a LOT more then six people just behind him. He then proceeds to sit and bash VT even more and says that they are taught violence. No this is still something very recent and in the minds of students and those in the community, yes it is going to cause a negative reaction. He said so himself he wouldnt dress up as the Penn State shooting victims so nothing should make it ok to dress up as a VT victims. He showed no remorse and was more worried about the facebook groups about the situation. Dressing up and poking fun at a tragedy is not ok. He said someone could dress up as his dead mother and that would be ok, he would just talk to the person who did it. Ok, well that “sounds” good, but when someone does that you know it is not so they can have a conversation with you. They are dressing up to hurt (even if they say they arent). Then to sit there and blame the person who was from VT who posted the pic. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself. YOU are the one who dressed up. Also, he stated that people are on the bandwagon about the tragedy. No, it is something that affected all people in that area and around the country. Talking about the tragedy helps people heal. So what you might call jumping on the bandwagon, I call healing. There comes a point in your life when you must grow up! If I was them and take a long hard look in the mirror and figure out what is wrong with me that I have to resort to such things for attention and then see NOTHING wrong with what I did. They has a serious lapse in judgement and should awful not for the negative attention they recieved but for what they did.

The moron in the interview is so disgusting. I am not saying that his free speech should be silenced. But I am saying that all actions have consequences and these two are now suffering those consequences as they should be.

He comes off as completely pathetic and angry on the tele-interview. He claims he needed to keep his social status as ” Popular and shocking” ? Didn’t he say there were at best 6 people attending that Halloween party? This guy and his friend want to be popular at any length and were desperately attempting to get as much attention as possible. They got their wish.

Penn State needs to boot these two before Penn State’s ethics are challenged. There is a line of decency and this is so far beyond that line. It is up to the Penn State community to uphold that line.

College Students are supposed to be the next great addition to our society. They are to take the lead in our society. What a let down.

Dressing up in tasteless costumes is nothing new. The Howard Stern show once had a “Tasteless Halloween Costume Contest” and 3 people dressed up as “Elizabeth Smart and her captors”, and some girl dressed up as “Lacie Peterson” (with a bleeding baby coming out of her gut) and everyone laughed hard!!!! Stop burning this poor kid to the cross! The only thing he’s guilty of is not being creative enough. I would have dressed up as Michael Vick with dead dogs hanging from my coat (and I love dogs). At the root of every joke is an exaggeration. This guy’s costume was no different.

You know something. We (the normal people out there) can be outraged and we can hope that people would be better than this. That’s all we can do. They (Nathan Jones and Jessica Maroclo) obviously have no remorse about their actions. I understand that what is intended to be private is not governed by the normal codes of conduct, but once it got out into the mainstream, that was an opportunity to make it right. The fact that they didn’t shows that they are immature and have a bit of a skewed view on things and they don’t feel bad about it. But perhaps one day they will.

They’re both seniors and would normally be looking for employment soon. Hopefully, the people who do the hiring where they apply will have heard about this story and realize that these are the type of people that they would rather not have working for them. I own a business, and would never ever hire someone like this to represent my company. Perhaps doing an internet search on a potential employee will become a standard practice for employers in the future.

I cannot believe any human being could be so uncaring, ignorant, morbid and inhuman!! I watched that one “person’s” interview on fox news and I choose my words carefully as I say he is a very “sick” individual. Also, I hope the proper people are watching this guy because anyone who can do this and show no remorse is bound to go “bigger” the next time. It wouldn’t surprise me if we read about him in the news before long “pushing the envelope” as he says. What’s next for him to cause a “shock” factor?? Wonder how he would feel if someone killed someone in his family to see if HE has a “shock factor” attitude then?? My son is a Junior at Virginia Tech and I thank God daily that he was not injured “physically” on that horrible day. I don’t feel anyone escaped pain from that day. Obviously…some much more than others…but…everyone that has a family member at Virginia Tech was injured and will never, ever be the same. Some good …. some bad. My heart goes out to everyone who had a family member “taken” on the tragic day and I pray you will get through this insensitive “prank” that was done. I’m so sick of hearing about “free speach” …that’s ridiculous!! It isn’t “free” when it “cost” so many so much pain!! A price has been paid for what they did at penn state and it’s not over yet.

What’s so strange to me is that because our God is a forgiving God…these idiots will be forgiven…BUT…ONLY…if they ask for forgiveness…which I have not seen them do. That one guy stands behind his actions. How dare them do such a terrible thing. They all deserve anything and everything they get from what they did. There’s always a price to be “paid” for our actions. This “sissy” won’t even go back to school because he’s AFRAID!! He should be but why doesn’t he act as big as he talks?? He should go back to school and face whatever he has coming to him. I see them all as “COWARDS”!!!

What if I dressed up as a victim, but the victim was my brother or best friend, I wanted to honor his death. What if my brother or best friend died in the war with Iraq and I wanted to honor his death, by dressing up in military cloths, with bullet holes. Would you say the same types of things. In both cases they are victims. Would you be in discust if a “everday person” non related to VT or the war, dressed up in military cloths with wounds? Would you say the same types of things. Or is it just as insulting as a Virginia Tech student? Every year at Halloween I see people dress up in military cloths with bullet holes. If that person goes to a party with five mothers of sons that died in the, how would they feel. society doesn’t feel sorry for them. Maybe VT victims needed more time before people dressed up as the victims. maybe it makes you remember that “IT HAPPENED” and no matter how much you say, or try to forget it you cant CHANGE IT.

Taking away their power to express their thoughts is not going to do any good. Never say that free speech and action should be limited. And no, revenge is not going to affect these kids either, I’m sure they’re laughing at how worked up everyone is getting. And, to the religious fanatics, this is not Jonathan Edwards’ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. Saying “burn in hell” and “there’s a place down below for these people” is definitely really representative of someone who truly believes in God… ??? Not.

And by “trend” he’s talking about the people who join the facebook groups for people who have died when there’s no chance they think about those deaths daily, they’re too caught up in their own lives. They’re more concerned with looking concerned over the deaths than with the deaths themselves.

i hope u feel very ashamed of yourselves… i hope you die

I really can’t believe that these people did this. I am so disgusted by this display. It makes me want to cry thinking back on what happened that day. The 32 victims will always be remembered, but this is NO WAY to show respect towards them. The jerks that mocked the 32 victims will get what’s coming to them. I will always respect and remember the 32 that died on that tragic day. Even though its been over a year since 4.16, there are still painful memories and much heartache left. No one should let these a$$holes disrespect the VT community and families like that.

I AM PROUD TO BE A HOKIE.

Ouch that is just wrong. People want attention obviously but there has to be some kind of limit to what you do.

    Poor choice? Yes
    Distasteful? Certainly
Something worth being outraged at? Not in the least.

I’m sorry, I would never wear a costume like this, but 32 people is nothing. How many people die of starvation every day because North Americans and Europeans are too damn lazy and greedy to actually share the wealth?

I think people get outraged at stuff like this because it means they’ll never have to get off their ass and actually do something.

    Disgusting.

  118. Rick Lewis on November 5th, 2008 4:21 pm

Unbelievable! I cannot put into words the anger this brings. Seeing these kids with apparently no compassion for the family, friends and victims of this tragic nightmare. Let us pray for those that have no compassion, sympathy or even the aptitude to know this is not how we honor and remember the victims.

  119. Michael on December 7th, 2008 2:23 pm

This is an extremely sensitive topic and there should have been more caution put into things like this before they go out to a party. Everything you do nowadays is scrutinized whether or not you think it is controversial. I just this taught them a lesson that stuff like this is just wrong.

I am deeply upset about the comments made by that penn state student. I go to penn state and my brother was a senior at Virginia Tech when the shooting happened. I will never forget that day the rest of my life and even to this day I thank god that it was not him. I think that that person is filth and should have his ass kicked. It makes me sick to my stomach for someone to joke about people dying. I am ashamed and it makes me cry that one person can ruin all the kind efforts that penn state did in support of VT.

  121. Ashley on January 20th, 2009 5:17 pm

What these guys did is insulting to people who were truly affected by the shootings at VT, but one of them also made an excellent point about the trendiness of mourning when extraordinary events such as these happen.

I was living in Savannah, Georgia when the shootings occurred, and via facebook I saw hundreds of people who had no direct, second party, or even third party connection to the shootings engaging in a massive display of what was nothing less than borrowed sorrow. I don’t deny the shootings were a bad thing, but I was also disgusted by the overeager mob sentimentality that seemed to dominate the days following the shootings. I knew no one at Virginia Tech, whether victim or bystander, but I thought-and still think-it’s disgusting to jump on the bandwagon of mourning a tragedy that isn’t really your own. It cheapens it, frankly. Let the truly suffering work out their suffering and don’t dilute their misery with your unattached, wanton emoting.

Give blood and volunteer, and don’t do so only when something like VT happens. Don’t just buy a shirt or a magnetic sticker and cry at a football game and think you’ve contributed anything significant, because in that case you have only done the exact opposite; you are making a mockery of another person’s real tragedy. In a way, that kind of mockery is closer to the mockery audaciously put forth by the Penn State students in question. What they did is shameful, but what many idly, trendily sorrowful people did across the country is equally shameful.

  122. Cassie on October 5th, 2009 3:43 pm

In all honesty… yes. What they did was wrong. They shouldn’t have dressed up as they did, but in no way shape or form do I believe that threatening them, or sending hateful messages is in any way the answer. I’m sure the victims of the shooting wouldn’t want people to respond to a situation that can be solved easily, with violence… after all they were killed by such actions.

So here’s where I think it stands. Those who dressed up as the victims should have community service of sorts to help them realize the parameters of what is and isn’t acceptable… And that’s it. No hurtful cruel messages etc. That will only cause them to get their backs up in defense, and then no one learns. Make this a teachable moment for them, not a time to show that violence is the answer… because as those at VT would tell you… it isn’t.

  123. jaywalk on October 7th, 2009 3:37 pm

its halloween, get over it. people die all the time and are remembered by it on halloween. how about all the people dressing up as all the dead celebrity’s famous or not so famous? same sh!t.

  124. Chris on October 18th, 2009 2:37 pm

Its just a costume people! Its just as bad as dressing up as a dead soldier, and I was in Iraq, and I have friends that died. What about people that glorify serial killers, dressing up like them, is that not hurtful to the families of the victims? Open your eyes, its not a big deal. Halloween is Halloween, leave it be.

  125. thor4nu on October 24th, 2009 12:41 am

this is absolutely ridiculous! do you people have no shame? you are making fun of innocent college students that got killed while attending class. i hope you rot in hell.

  126. Kattie on November 29th, 2009 1:29 am

This is awful. What happend there, wasn’t anyones fault. You have taken things too far.

  127. will on December 29th, 2009 5:50 pm

oh please, its just a bit of fun, and actually a very cool idea (whish i had thought of it), the more serious question is why was the gun man able to get a gun? yet for some reason the constitution is sacred, if we made it much much harder to get guns this problem would be solved, the fact that guns are still available is the tragedy not some kinds having fun

  128. wade on February 13th, 2010 1:48 pm

The fact that the 2 people attended Penn State does not mean they represent Penn State – Penn State does not and cannot hold responsibility for individual student behavior.

  129. wade on February 13th, 2010 2:11 pm

These are truly examples of insensitive and distasteful use of freedom of expression. However, I am equally concerned about the suggestions of violent acts such as “beating” those who were involved. It is obvious the freedom which allowed such disgusting and insensitive expression is a double edge sword. Violence is not the answer.

  130. stephen on February 15th, 2010 9:02 pm

-They have freedom of expression. They do not have to be sympathetic to the victims. They have the right to be clever at the expense of their good taste.
-The families of the victims would had never found out about it if it wasn’t on the news. Why are we giving this attention?
-Thousands of people are murdered every year. 32 at VT is horrible but the only reason people care(d) is because it was to dramatized.
-Im going as a Haitian with a cinder block in my head next Halloween. 200,000 dead compared to 32….I’ll be on every news channel.
