CES 2008 – Have touch phones jumped the shark?

Motorola ROKR E8

Touch Phones.

There are all sorts of announcements coming out of CES. Not the least of which was Motorola’s news of a new touch-sensitive addition to it’s Moto ROKR line of phone’s called the E8. I blame Apple for the abundance of new touch phone’s coming out. Everybody seems to be making some kind of iPhone clone. HTC has it’s touch, Motorola now has the E8. Who’s next?

Easing off a little bit. The E8 sports a touchpad that disappears when it’s not in use. The keypad morphs into a control for music playing abilities, which also require you use a very iPod-looking click wheel. It has all of the other bells and whistle’s you would expect, including wireless Internet, bluetooth and an SD card slot so you can expand the phone’s memory.

But, still, I am kinda waiting to see what’s next. I mean, the Razer was so cool when it came out. Now (not even 18 months later) you can buy the thing in vending machines! Seriously, it’s become a bubble gum machine prize.

When it comes to touch, the iPhone did most of this first and (let’s face it) best. It just seems like touch-sensitive phone’s are already a thing of past and well on their way to the exit aisles of Wal-Mart.

Ahh finally. Someone else that’s done with touch phones. I do a fair amount of typing on the phone, and the iPhone virtual keyboard is just terrible. Much happier with a pretty standard blackberry.

I still aint finished with my 3G iPhone! I think other phones being released with touch screen is a good thing for technology advancements, but no touch phone will ever be better than the iphone in my opinion

Think the iphone is a great phone, no question. The BlackBerry Storm is interesting – not as good, unless business email is your thing. It is still early days & I think a bit of competition is good & will stimulate inovation.

Interesting that everyone seems to be following the Apple iPhone thing.. I was turned on to the touchscreen type of phones by the Sprint PPC-6700 before I ever heard of the iPhone. The coolest thing about it was the ability to hack the hell out of the thing too. Never really was interested enough in the iPhone to shell out that much cash, when both the old and new Pocket-PCs are still so easy to find at a small fraction of the iDoodads prices…

It will be interesting to see what happens to the phone development cycle as netbooks become more popular and prices continue to decrease. Once we have tiny affordable computers that almost fit in our pockets, what will happen to our phones? Will they continue to become more complex or revert to being just phone devices or some combination of both?
